Huelgoat Diary Huelgoat Diary » My simple life in Brittany, France

Welcome to Huelgoat Diary

working-hardWelcome to my Family & Friends website.

For six years I detailed my adventures in France at www.BretonDiary.com.  I had to close it down due to time restrictions but the old posts may be seen at http://www.keitheckstein.com/breton-diary/

HuelgoatDiary.com details my simple life in Brittany and the things that are really important to me – such as cooking, eating, reading and enjoying the beautiful countryside and the people who live here.

Whilst this group of posts is certainly not intended to be a definitive guide to living in France (it’s more of an explanation of how and why I choose to live here), you may find information here that aids you in your life (whether you are living here now, or planning to move over), or for your holidays in this beautiful part of France where I have chosen to make my home.

Soft Drink Dispenser – Breton Style!

SDC10048Now, sometimes people suggest (in a very nice way), that…

We might be slightly behind the times in rural Brittany.

And, when the same people suggest that we are positively prehistoric in Finistère, I do have to admit that they might have a point.

But, when Jill and I spotted a local soft drinks dispenser outside a pâtisserie and tea shop in Callac…

Fête de l’Oignon de Roscoff

SDC10027

What started of as a day’s fishing trip turned into a visit, in typically Eckstein manner, to the Fête de l’Oignon de Roscoff.

Jill and I had intended to go fishing at Saint Pol de Léon but, by the time that we got there, the tide had turned and all the fishes had swum away.

Which is a shame as I had bought (and prepared, in a loving fashion) some nice fresh squid for them to enjoy!

Just say no!

SDC10045Hello

My name is Keith Eckstein and I’m an addict!

I wasn’t always this way;

Once I was a decent person with a responsible job in the city.

And, now, I’m just a despicable addict!

Sandcastle Day!

11928845_10153513761374437_1788087938_oOn Friday, Jill and I did attempt to build the bestest, biggest sandcastle in the world.

Unfortunately, we totally failed!

I started off by drawing out the foundations but…

It was too hot to follow the instructions and, so…

Jill and I decided to give up on sandcastle building and just to pig out on the picnic and relax a bit as well.

Susie’s Backend at Roscoff!

SDC10041

This post is dedicated to Sarah Hague who complained (at least, I think that she was complaining) that there weren’t enough pictures of the spare wheel cover on the new love of my life.

Thus, I drove all the way to Roscoff so that I could take a couple more!

I love Susie!

i-love-susieI met her for the first time yesterday morning. And, it was love at first sight!

We first hooked up online and I went round to see her straight away.

I even washed my hair and put some of that expensive aftershave on.

She was waiting for me outside her house and I was immediately swept away.

She looked so beautiful and…

Just so perfect for me.

I slipped into her straight away and gave her a good going over and seeing to.

And then I took her home and did it all again!

I was going to attempt a third round but…

I was a bit tired and it was getting late – after all, I’m not 18 any more!

In fact…

I was so enamoured that,

I somehow forget to breathe.

Which, as it happens, is a quote from Lesson Five of French for Beginners which is a strangely unpublished (and slightly unfinished; which might explain why it is unpublished) novel written by some strange English guy who jacked in a perfectly good job and moved to France to write a novel that he assumed, at the time, would one day be finished.

More Important than Sex!

Huelgoat-market

Huelgoat Market

It’s Thursday and that means that it’s both market day and, also, my favourite day of the week.

The day starts at 5am when a lorry turns up to drop a pallet of fresh fruit and veg off in the market place.

Living in the market square, if I haven’t been woken up by the bakers starting work at 3am then the first market deliveries will certainly wake me up.

The fruit and veg guy turns up at 7am.

All the rest of the stalls turn up by 8am.

I love going to the bar at 8am just so that I can sit outside and watch the market people setting up their stalls.

Master Builder

chateau-anglaisFollowing a comment from one visitor to this blog…

I have decided to upload some images to prove that I actually built the castle that I mentioned in the last post and,

King of the Castle!

SDC16304

A sunny Sunday meant only one thing….

A trip to the seaside.

I was going to pack my bucket and spade but,

The last time that I owned a bucket and spade I was about 9 years old and hadn’t quite graduated to wearing long trousers and probably still had stabilisers on my bike.

So, Jill and I set off to Carantec and, after lunch, I bought a bucket and spade (and, for some strange reason), a Frisbee!

Even Donkeys Deserve Holidays

SDC16283

So, I guess it was a choice between a week at Butlins or…

A walking tour of Brittany.

If I were a donkey I know which one I would choose.

Nuclear Paddling

So, when Jill came up for the weekend we decided to go for a walk.

We ended up at Brennilis and had a quick thought about walking round the lake that cools the power station.

However, as the walk is about 17km we quickly decided that it was a bit too far.

We did do a little bit of it and enjoyed what we did but…

The important thing was, of course,

My paddle!

Bum Licking Goats

Recently, I spent a delightful  Sunday afternoon with some friends near Chateauneuf de Faou when…

One of my friends mentioned that a mutual friend, the writer, George East, had suggested that my writing only one post a year wasn’t really the right (or most efficient) way of writing a blog.

Ivor

So, I bought a friend for my mate, Ivor…

If I get lonely (not that I ever do)…

I can always have a chat with him (which I often do!)

He seems to be a bit scared of me…

But he seems to like me spraying some water on him?

He also doesn’t seem to like the false frog that I’ve brought him?

“Doesn’t talk/croak much, does he…?”

Is all that he says!

My Garden – 2014

HuelgoatDiary-05So, with some assistance from Jill…

And a few visits to the garden center..

I have finally got my garden almost ready for some relaxing summer days.

I made some decisions…

I wanted to try and grow some tomatoes and courgettes.

I wanted to be surrounded by flowers.

I wanted it to be a colourful jungle.

I wanted it to be an “extra” room away from the noise from the market square.

Also, away from my computers (and work!)

I wanted to be able to grow some of my plants from seed.

That meant a mini greenhouse.

Jill’s Photos from our day out in Josselin

jills-photos-from-josselin-01So….

Jill took some photos as well.

This was our Moules Frites.

Very cheap and very tasty!

I do have to say that neither of us could actually finish our meals; my Father would be rolling in his grave – when I was a kid we used to have Moules eating competitions!

Seriously; if you are ever in Josselin and need a good meal…

La Sarrazine is very good and very cheap!

There are better places to eat in Josselin (Le Prieure de Clisson is great and La Table de O also gets my vote) but…

A day out in Josselin

Well, having worked pretty much through the night I  had a day out in Josselin (where I spent many happy years) with Jill.

We met up at La Rotonde (it used to be our local bar and I still have fond memories of it.)

We went for a walk and, as is only to be expected, ended up at the Restaurant de la Chateau where we just had to have a little Ricard.

Some habits die hard!

You can take the boy out of Josselin but…

You can never take Josselin out of the boy!

A Walk around the Lake

So…

This morning I decided to go  for a walk around the Lake at Huelgoat in order to take a break from work.

Now that the kids have gone back to school it was nice and quiet.

And, for once, there was no one sat on MY bench!

When I become president (of France), I’ll immediately pass a law banning anyone other than me from sitting on MY bench!

And anyone caught sneakily parking their bottom on it…

Will be immediately hauled off to the guillotine…

To have it chopped off!

Carhaix Market

So, it being Saturday…

I had to make the choice between staying in and doing some housework or…

Going to the Saturday morning market at Carhaix.

Easy decision, really?

I ended up buying some sunflowers…

And some very interesting multi coloured tomatoes.

Two Fishes

A week ago I mentioned (in La Mare aux Sangliers) that I had met an old man at La Mare aux Sangliers who told me he had seen two fishes….

“They were just over there”, he said, pointing.

I looked but, there were no fish to be seen.

“I saw them”, he repeated!

I took another look but couldn’t see any fish.

“Two years ago, it was. or was it ten?  Two little fishes – just by the bridge!”

It was then that I realised that I was talking to yet another nutter – somehow they seem to find me wherever I am!

Summer Mushrooms – Huelgoat

Although it wasn’t really a mushrooming trip into the forest this morning…

I did take my basket and a mushrooming knife…

Just in case?

It was a good job too!

I started off finding a few Pieds Rouge (small Ceps that need to be checked as they can be confused with Boletus Satanas (the Devil’s Mushroom) and thought that they looked pretty silly rattling round the bottom of my basket.
